5 Signs You Need to Remove a Tree
Posted on
Trees are a beautiful and valuable part of our property, but sometimes they can become a liability. Knowing when a tree needs to be removed is key to keeping your home and family safe. Here are five common signs that it might be time to call a professional.
1. Significant Trunk Damage
Inspect the trunk for deep cracks, large cavities, or missing bark. These are signs of structural weakness. If more than 25% of the trunk is damaged, the tree may be at high risk of failing.
2. The Tree is Leaning
A sudden lean, or a lean of more than 15 degrees, is a major warning sign. This often indicates root failure or ground instability. Look for exposed roots or cracked soil on the side opposite the lean.
3. Large, Dead Branches
If 50% or more of the tree is dead, it's often too late to save it. Large dead branches, often called "widow-makers," can fall at any time, posing a serious risk to anything below.
4. Signs of Disease or Pest Infestation
Look for mushrooms growing at the base (a sign of root rot), large areas of soft or crumbly wood, or small holes in the bark, which can indicate an insect infestation.
5. It's Too Close to Your Home
If a tree's branches are scraping your roof or its roots are threatening your foundation, it may need to be removed, even if it's healthy. An expert can sometimes prune the tree, but removal is often the safest long-term solution.
